RePower Alberta Launches Across the Province
Building the Green Economy
Many communities in Alberta are feeling the heat from a variety different resource extractive industries - coal, oil, gas, tar sands, nuclear, etc. For the most part these industries come under the guise as energy and job providers, but in reality the burden of the toxic legacy they will leave on the land, water, and community far outweighs any short-term job benefits. In Alberta, oil and gas extraction actually produces the least amount of jobs per dollar invested compared to health care, education, construction and transportation.
But how can we provide economic opportunities for community members while at the same time protect the integrity of the land, the water and the natural ecosystems?
A green, clean and just economy may be the answer.
RePower Alberta is a campaign teamed by Sierra Club Prairie and Greenpeace, demanding the Alberta government put forth a Green Energy Strategy. As part of the campaign RePower Alberta is touring the province organizing and presenting a series of Green Energy and Green Jobs events to province communities to share the facts about Alberta’s potential for a green economy.
We will present alternatives to fossil fuel based energy sources that empower communities, create jobs, and do not introduce harmful pollutants to ecosystems and our health. The speakers (about 3-4) for each event may differ, depending what our community folks feel is the best fit for where their community is at and its unique issues.
There is also the potential, if your group is interested, in also holding a more in depth smaller group organizing session to help those who are actively working on this issue and to bring in expert speakers. Aside from the presentation for the community, we want to try to set up meetings with interested councillors and/or MLA's where possible, as well as meet with local media, school presentations, etc.
